In working towards climate targets—and the SDGs more broadly—there is clear consensus on the increasing demand for minerals and metals. However, a perceived tension remains between meeting this demand and achieving the targets set by the Global Biodiversity Framework, given the mining industry’s historical role in environmental degradation.

Members of CMSI’s partner organisations will be at COP16 to provide an update on efforts to simplify the current mining standards landscape and promote continuous improvement of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices across individual metals’ value chains. You can catch them at the following events:

ACM-hosted event: ‘Initiative to consolidate mining standards’

ICMM-hosted event: ‘Responsible mining’s role in meeting global climate and nature goals’

29 October 2024, 15:00 – 15:45 (Colombia Standard Time)
Blue Zone, Business and Nature Hub, Place Quebec.

This session aims to explore how the mining and metals industry can be a key partner in helping to deliver a wide range of targets in the Framework through thoughtful approaches to land and water stewardship that actively mitigate impacts, whilst contributing to the conservation and restoration of nature. The session will touch on the importance of consolidating responsible mining standards to accelerate these approaches more widely across the industry, and will bring in different voices from the mining industry and its stakeholders to contribute their own experiences on the topic.

Aidan Davy, ICMM is speaking alongside Libby Sandbrook, Flora & Fauna and other representatives in a session to raise awareness of the importance of responsible mining and mining standards—including a focus on ongoing efforts to develop a consolidated Standard.
